Our friends’ daughter was turning 3, and it was the summer. They wanted something that would be fun and different from the standard princesses. We settled on the idea of an island with a girl standing next to a hut. There would be lots of sea creatures in the water and a palm tree and sand.

As always, the sculpture is done in gum paste. The sand is brown sugar, and the “wooden” supports around the island are wafer desert sticks that I broke into different lengths. All of the animals are hand made, as is the girl and her skirt and necklace.

As the party went on, kids kept coming up to look at the cake. I didn’t notice at first, but many of them took a starfish or seashell to tide them over until actual cake time. It was cute to see that the cake was so popular, that the kids couldn’t keep their hands to themselves.
